Arizona Senator John McCain reemerged on Tuesday to launch an attack on President Donald Trump, but it didn’t end well for him.
McCain has spent the past few years alienating Republicans with his frequent ridiculous attacks on Trump. He launched yet another one today, when the senator released a statement bashing Trump for his call with Russian President Vladimir Putin congratulating him for his recent electoral victory.
Mediaite reported that the Kremlin released a statement Tuesday morning saying that Trump called his Russian counterpart to congratulate him on his commanding victory in Russia’s presidential election. Trump’s White House confirmed that the call took place, with the president saying that he congratulated Putin “on the victory,” adding that he would seek to meet up with the Russian leader in the future.
Though Trump was clearly just trying to be diplomatic, McCain slammed him for acknowledging Putin’s victory.
“An American president does not lead the Free World by congratulating dictators on winning sham elections,” McCain wrote in a statement. “And by doing so with Vladimir Putin, President Trump insulted every Russian citizen who was denied the right to vote in a free and fair election to determine their country’s future, including the countless Russian patriots who have risked so much to protest and resist Putin’s regime.”
Twitter users, however, were quick to let McCain know that nobody cares what he thinks about Trump:
